This potential ‘empty nester’ is chock full of design and construction details that led us to Green Build Certification by the National Association of Home Builders. We crafted elegant ‘aging in place’ details with barrier free bath options and cottage-style, one floor living. Under the guidance of Healthy Homes, each design detail (from placement on the lot to eco-friendly paint) ensures an environmentally healthy, efficient and sustainable life-style.

greenGreen. The list is long. Beautiful, durable SmartSide siding is created from wood scraps and by products. Pella Designer Series windows feature advanced Low-E (low emittance) coating which allows passive solar. Natural maple floors harvested and milled within 50 miles of Beloit for a low carbon imprint. Corian counters offer a lifetime of renewable luster. Interior lighting features LED modules with exterior fluorescent fixtures. Geothermal heating and cooling systems plus on-demand hot water reduces energy consumption with less waste. Position on the lot ensures maximum passive solar energy and light benefit.

EfficientEfficient. The temperature deep inside the earth is our new best friend. Installed Geothermal heat pump system uses air pre-heated and pre-cooled by the earth prior to moving through the house. Advanced framing techniques feature 2”x6” framing 24” on center with open corners. Translated that means less heat transmitted through wood studs and more opportunity for insulating with spray damp cellulose (a recycled product) to a R27.5 rating. Cement slab poured over R10 insulation board prevents lower level heat loss. R50 Blown Cellulose tops off the attic. A three-sided gas fireplace serves as back-up for first floor heating on the coldest days. Water Sense plumbing fixtures surpass industry standard on efficiency flow rate. Solar panel prep work is complete if purchaser chooses to install solar panels for an additional energy source.

HealthyHealthy. Creating a healthy environment is built on large and small details. An Energy Recovery Ventilator preconditions incoming fresh air with exhausted air and regularly completes a total air exchange on a pre-determined schedule to help prevent mold and mildew created by stagnant air. Ongoing radon mitigation continually vents the footings to ensure a dry lower level. All first level floors (featuring hardwood or ceramic tiles) are hard, cleanable surfaces. Natural light streams throughout the house due to the southern exposure and egressed lower level. The cellulous insulation is mold resistant and fire resistant. Paints used throughout the house are low VOC.

transitionsTransitions. This house is built to accommodate the natural needs that occur with age. First level bathrooms are barrier free for easy- access in and out of showers. Each shower provides a convenient bench and easy-reach built in shampoo box. The kitchen features a large microwave drawer and low pantry shelves for reach-free accommodations. Even the hardware selected for the cabinets is ergonomically designed for ease of use. Ample hallways and traffic paths offer plenty of room for barrier free movement. Total one floor living allows use of stairways to be an option instead of a necessity.
